The City Inspector position was established in 1997 to deal with growing development and lack of construction standards in Cameron. Up to that time, the Building Department had a part-time employee who was called on to perform two to three basic inspections per building project on an as-needed basis.
From 1998 to 2008, there were more than 400 new homes built, each home requiring a minimum of 12 to 20 separate inspections not including re-inspections. Thousands of renovations, remodels, additions on residential properties, and commercial projects have necessitated additional requirements and inspections.
About the Department
The City of Cameron’s goal is to ensure that new construction and improvements to existing buildings comply with current standards which provide safety for the inhabitants and value to the property owners.
The Building Inspections staff is here to assist you with answers to questions, site visits, inspections, and to review plans for any project from the simple lawn shed or fence to large commercial projects and subdivisions.
In October 2011, the Insurance Services Office (ISO) conducted an evaluation of the City of Cameron. The ISO serves the property/casualty insurance industry. ISO collects information on a community's building code adoption and enforcement services, analyzes the data, and then assigns a Building Code Effectiveness Classification from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents exemplary commitment to building code enforcement. The concept behind BCEGS is simple. Municipalities with well-enforced, up-to-date codes demonstrate better loss experience and their citizens' insurance rates can reflect that. The prospect of minimizing catastrophe-related damage and ultimately lowering insurance costs gives communities an incentive to enforce their building codes rigorously. The City of Cameron has received a BCEGS class of 4 and this rating will stay in effect for the next 5 years. The entire Building Code Enforcement Evaluation Report
is available here or by contacting the City Clerk's Office at City Hall for inspection.
Our mission is to ensure public safety through consistent and comprehensive inspection of all permitted construction.
