N-W Electric employs 60 and serves as a regional power provider transmitting electricity to several other local distribution coops. The local cooperatives then sell power to cities or directly to individual customers.
Cameron’s water treatment capacity was improved in 1999 with construction of buildings housing new filtration systems. Voters approved a $3.3 million bond issue which allowed destratification at Cameron’s reservoirs as well as plant expansion. The revenue bond was paid by a water rate increase of only five percent.
Cameron’s waste water treatment process transforms sludge into a bio-solid which is then land-applied by the Terra Gator to increase agricultural production. Area farmers are quick to sign-up for the free, natural fertilizer.
No, this isn’t a City park, it’s a bit of creative landscaping at Cameron’s Waste Water Treatment plant. The City logo is featured at the left while discarded tires frame a unique planter on the right. Recycling is high on the City’s priority list. The tanks in the rear are sludge-handling units.
Cameron’s waste water treatment process utilizes oxidation ditches whereby air and natural biodegradable components are mixed to begin the separation of solids and liquids. After treatment, the solids are used as fertilizer while the clean water is pumped into a nearby stream where it supports fish and wildlife. In 1997, the City doubled its treatment capacity to meet the demands of community growth.
The City of Cameron’s Public Works Building houses the Street Department and Water & Sewer Distribution Services. The 10,000 square-foot structure was completed in 2000.
